Kiwanis Park

Town of Pittsboro NC | ~1 Acre

The Project

Kiwanis Park was an ultra–low budget renovation that relied on creativity, community craftsmanship, and a deep commitment to natural play. As one of North Carolina’s earliest natural playgrounds, the project transformed underutilized space into an immersive, sensory-rich environment that gained statewide recognition, including coverage in the Raleigh News & Observer and a Polish print design magazine. The park’s growing reputation in the field was further underscored when Dr. Robin Moore, Director Emeritus of the Natural Learning Initiative at NC State University and a pioneer of nature-based play design, was already familiar with the project when we first met.

I initiated the renovation and led the conceptual design process, collaborating closely with landscape architects, local craftsmen, and community volunteers. Field adjustments were made to maximize the use of reclaimed and found natural materials—such as curved sassafras logs repurposed into sculptural seating. I personally contributed carpentry and construction work to deliver distinctive, handcrafted features that reinforced the park’s authenticity and charm.

Native plantings were selected not only for ecological value but also for sensory engagement—considering scent, color, texture, and seasonal change. The result is a playful, nature-integrated space that encourages exploration while supporting caregiver interaction and community connection. Over time, the maturing canopy has further enhanced the park’s comfort and identity, making it a beloved destination for families and a model for resourceful, human-centered park design.
